On the 23rd and 24th of August 2008, the C.A.T.C.H club organised a 30 Hour Famine in our own college in conjunction with the 30 Hour Famine organised by World Wision Malaysia. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.
This year, the C.A.T.C.H Club organized our own unique camp and together with its 40 over enthusiastic members who participated in the 30 Hour Famine, fasted together for 30 hours(Yes, 30 full hours!!!)...and together we learnt, and felt the lives of children around the world who live in poverty.
For the first 26 hours in the college, while fasting, the participants took part in a lot of exciting and insightful activities. There were the 3 main challenges - food, home and medical. Through these challenges, we learnt about global poverty issues. Towards the end of the first day, we had our very own 'Saturday Night Live' where the teams ( and the organising committee) came up with their very creative sketches. The night was filled with laughter and tears(from laughing too hard) and it was a great way to end the night.
The next day, it was a more relaxed time as we all prepared to make our way to the Bukit Jalil Satudium where the last 4 hours were spent at a star-studded Famine Countdown event, where we broke fast together with Famine Campers from across the country!!!
The last 4 hours are spent at a star-studded Famine Countdown event, where we will break fast together with Famine Campers from across the country!!! It was an ardous task towards the end, where we struggled in the heat...and the pouring rain. But, nothing could stop our spirit! We kept our spirits alive by resting on each others shoulders and keeping each other company with lots of talk, laughs and lots of singing! Oh what cheer! And finally, the moment came...the countdown to the last minutes and seconds of the 30 hour famine fast! Through the hugs and cheers or "We Did It, We Did It!"...We broke fast on just a packet of Coco Crunch and a bottle of Soya Bean...(trust me, Coco Crunch never tasted this good in my life before!) and we could feel how it is for children who live in poverty everyday of their lives. Only that what these children face is far worse that what struggles we went through for this 2 days.
All in all, through this meanigful event and activites, it brought teams closer together, overcame obstacles and in the end, we witnessed tremendous strength, cooperation, creativity and leadership within the members of the various teams. Together, we learnt to appreciate all that we take for granted in our lives...and at the same time, it brought our faculty together, as new friendships were made, and old ones strengthened. It was a sucess, a blast, and it will be one that I (and i am sure, it is for many others too) will cherish for months and years to come!
